《四十二把钥匙》SECOND SPRING

For seven years, Su Ruo managed the Pei household with impeccable care, leaving not a single coin unaccounted for in the books nor a single grain missing from the storehouses. Yet, her only reward was the accusation of being barren. On the day the Pei family welcomed Lady Qiao into the fold in front of the entire clan, Su Ruo placed forty-two keys back on the ancestral altar and requested a divorce. Three days later, she remarried Lu Zheng, a river patrol censor whose previous two fiancées had died before their weddings, earning him a reputation for cursing his wives. He needed a wife who could understand ledgers; she needed a place to stand. They agreed to a one-year arrangement. But she remembered every river works payment in the Pei family's accounts, and she remembered the medicine she had been made to drink for seven years. When the hollow stones of the river embankment, the missing ninety-one thousand taels of silver, and the eighty-four prescriptions bearing the old madam's seal all aligned, two great houses began to crumble at once.
